best point of sale for supermarket

There’s no single best POS for supermarkets. The right one depends on your store size, country, and whether you want POS alone or tied into inventory and accounting. Here are the options that come up most often.

Grocery-specific systems (best for larger or high-SKU stores)

NerdWallet’s roundup names IT Retail as the best overall grocery POS. I’d shortlist it if you need weighted items, perishables and multiple lanes.

Markt POS is built for grocers, specialty markets and small supermarkets.

Others that appear in grocery comparisons include Osprey POS and ECRS.

General retail POS (best for small stores with simple needs)

Square is recommended for smaller grocery stores with simple needs, and Clover for dependable, well-designed hardware.

Lightspeed is another cloud option with strong integrations.

ERP-integrated option

Odoo POS (which fits the Odoo work you’ve been exploring) is worth considering if you want checkout, stock, purchasing and accounting in one database. Its supermarket depth, such as scale integration and expiry tracking, varies by setup, so test it against your needs.

What to check before choosing

It handles weighted and barcoded items, batch and expiry tracking, and promotions and loyalty.

It keeps working offline and syncs when the connection returns.

It supports the payment methods your customers use, including local mobile money where relevant.

It meets your country’s tax-receipt rules. This often rules products out, because many US-focused systems don’t support local fiscal requirements.

The total cost is clear: hardware, licences, support and implementation.

Treat the rankings with caution. Most “best POS” lists are written by vendors who place themselves first, and the main ones I found were US- or India-focused.

If you tell me your country, number of lanes, and whether you need accounting or multi-branch support, I can narrow this to two or three options. I can also draft a comparison table or a blog post on the topic.
